The Guitarist in the Subway
By Sun Zhuming
The light is dim and faint in the subway
Lightly, lightly does a guitarist play
The supple guitar tune drawls long and grey
Wellladay, why so sadly do you play?
Maybe it recalls the love gone away
Maybe it intones the passage of day
Maybe it laments the world changed this way
Wellladay, why so sadly do you play?
I'd love to sing but my throat is frozen
I'd love to play but the string is broken
And the one who listens to me is gone.
O now I change a tune, a roundelay
Pluck, orioles in the willows sing a lay
Pluck, the setting sun to the pond casts ray
Pluck, the river to the east rolls its way
